UK Laws and Legislation Regarding Fraud

Overview

Did you know that fraud is the most frequently occurring crime in the UK? It's not just a minor issue either - fraud costs the UK billions of pounds every year. In fact, according to the 2017 Annual Fraud Indicator, the total cost of fraud losses to the UK is estimated at a staggering £190 billion per year! The private sector is hit the hardest, losing around £140 billion, while the public sector may be losing more than £40 billion and individuals around £7 billion. These figures highlight the urgent need for individuals and organisations to understand the risks of fraud and take appropriate measures to prevent and respond to it.

The "Fraud Awareness and Prevention Training" course provides a comprehensive theoretical understanding of the key principles of fraud investigation, prevention, and response. The course consists of six modules that cover a range of topics, from becoming a fraud investigator to UK laws and legislation regarding fraud.

The course starts with a focus on the role of a fraud investigator, exploring the skills and attributes required to effectively investigate fraudulent activity. After that, there is a primer on risk management and how to identify potential fraud risks, while a sole module covers the key principles of fraud prevention.

There is also a module which delves into the techniques used to detect fraud and find evidence, while another module talks about the investigation and response process once fraud has been identified. Finally, the last module provides an overview of UK laws and legislation regarding fraud.

This course is ideal for anyone who wants to gain a theoretical understanding of fraud investigation, prevention, and response, including professionals who work in roles where fraud may be a risk. It provides essential knowledge that can help individuals and organisations prevent and respond to fraudulent activity, reducing the impact of fraud and protecting their interests.

Why Is This Training Important?

Compliance

It’s necessary to understand and obey the law, overall, when it comes to excluding fraud in the workplace. The Fraud Act 2006 places a legal obligation on anyone who commits or helps in a deceptive activity. Penalties can include heavy fines or even prison sentences.

This Act replaced the old Theft Act 1968, helping the law keep pace with modern threats, including digital and financial fraud. It assigns a stronger framework for identifying and prosecuting fraud-related offences.

This training not only describes the key component of the Fraud Act but also assists your organisation in strengthening a culture of awareness and prevention. It instructs employees how to mark risks rapidly, report concerns, and secure both company and consumer interests.

The Fraud Act 2006 (Chapter 35) explains a general offence of fraud, which can be committed in three ways: by incorrect representation, by failing to disclose actuality, or by abusing a position of trust.

The Act also put new offences, including dishonestly obtaining services, possessing or manufacturing instruments used to commit fraud, and deceptive trading by individuals who are not part of a corporation
